An exciting and interesting project
During the three days he spent in the area, he was given a thorough presentation of both the expert justification for the initiative and of Norwegian cultural and natural management. Mr Young underlines the fact that getting onto the World Heritage List involves a lot of work, but that conserving the areas once they have been included on the list involves at least as much work, if not more. It is therefore essential that expedient and established management models are in place.

In addition to the expert presentations, time was also set aside for informal discussions with politicians, mountain management boards and mountain supervisory bodies in the area. ”It was important to us that he got an impression of the wide interest the project has attracted, at the same time as it was important to keep the number of participants to a level that facilitated easy and informal dialogue. We think we succeeded in ensuring that the whole area was represented at all levels, “says Per Dag Hole.

Mr Young emphasised the fact that hunting and hunting culture is currently an underrepresented topic on UNESCO’s list. At the same time, it is interesting to see how a resource which was originally part of a hunting and trapping tradition developed into an international trading commodity.

After his departure from Norway, Mr Young will write a report about the basis for the project and the relevance of the initiative in relation to UNESCO’s World Heritage List. “We are looking forward to receiving this report with great interest,” says project manager John Olsen.
