The hunting pit is of the earthen type and was found in the vicinity of the shore zone. It formed part of a larger system that incorporated an old reindeer migration route situated between the Gautsjøen and Grynningen lakes. The pit was dug into the earth/sandbank and was originally approximately170 cm in length, 60-70 cm wide and approximately 170 cm deep. The walls were supported by round birch poles, some of which had been burnt to allow impregnation of the wood. Thanks to conditions conducive to preservation, the bottom 40 - 50 cm of the poles has been preserved, affording important information regarding the construction of the pits. After excavation, the entire pit was exhumed. It will be conserved and duly put on exhibit in the area. |
