The project Wild Reindeer Hunting as World Heritage regards the invitation to the meeting as a positive sign and takes it as a confirmation that the project has also attracted interest and recognition from official circles in Norway. In an article in the journal Fortidsvern, the Directorate for Cultural Heritage (RA) stated that the list of proposals for new World Heritage sites was approaching 30 locations. This list has now been reduced to four and the Directorate does not rule out the possibility of a further reduction.
The project had a good opportunity to present the professional work that has been done in the last year. In addition, we emphasised the great local involvement in the area. In previous contexts (in connection with the nomination of the Vega islands, among others) this has been emphasised as very positive.
In previous correspondence with the project the Directorate has expressed recognition of the professional work the project has done and the expertise attached to the project via the Board, the expert group and secretariat. The Directorate nevertheless points out that it is the Directorate, as representative of the state, that will make the final decision, both on whether a project is to be included on the tentative list and on how the project should be designed in future.
The project was represented by Chairperson of the board Børge Brende, Kristin Hille Valla, Egil Mikkelsen, Dagfin Claudius, Per Dag Hole, Reidar Andersen, Anitra Fossum, Jostein Bergstøl and project manager John Olsen.
After the meeting, a unanimous Board led by Børge Brende stated that it still believed strongly that the project will succeed in its efforts to get onto the tentative list.
According to the Directorate, the revised tentative list will be sent to UNESCO by 1 February 2007. We will not know for certain until then which sites Norway wishes to promote in the years to come.
