In its coverage, TV2 emphasised that this was part of the last remaining wild reindeer population in Europe and that the incident was therefore of both national and international importance. TV2 also pointed out that wild reindeer are part of a ten thousand year long Norwegian hunting tradition. These are the same arguments used by the project Wild Reindeer Hunting as World Heritage in its argumentation for why Norway should take international responsibility for this historical tradition by nominating it for inclusion on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. We are therefore very happy that TV2 clearly took the point.
The incident was extremely tragic for the wild reindeer population in the area, but both scientists and management bodies believe that the wild reindeer herd will survive. Such accidents are a well-known phenomenon in mountain areas and the herd has survived such challenges in the past. However, it may be necessary to cancel hunting in the area for some years.
